Why engineers specify polypropylene
Chemical resistance — PP shrugs off acids, bases, and many solvents that craze or crack other plastics.
Living hinges — PP flexes repeatedly without failing at the fold, which is why nearly every living-hinge part you've ever opened was polypropylene.
Wash-down and food-adjacent lines — it takes repeated cleaning without swelling or cracking.
Fatigue life — it bends and returns instead of cracking.
It matches what's already on the line — a replacement part in a different plastic is a different part.
PP vs. the usual substitutes
PETG is what most shops quote when they can't run PP. It's a fine general-purpose plastic — but it doesn't match PP's chemical resistance or hinge fatigue life. If the part needs to be PP, a substitute is not the part.
ASA wins outdoors — PP's weak spot is UV. Sun-exposed parts go to ASA; chemical exposure goes to PP.
Nylon and carbon-fiber nylon win on stiffness and wear — but nylon absorbs moisture and PP barely does. Wet, chemical-heavy environments favor PP; high-load brackets favor the nylons.

Why most shops say no — and we don't
Polypropylene has very low surface energy — it does not want to stick to the build plate or to itself. It also shrinks as it cools, which pulls corners up off the bed. Shops that haven't solved those two problems quote you in PETG instead and call it close enough. We run PP as a standard material on our production floor — see the full materials lineup — because the parts that need it tend to be exactly the parts nobody else will make.
The honest limits
PP is not the answer to everything. It degrades in long-term UV exposure — outdoor parts go to ASA. It's less stiff than the nylons — high-load brackets go to carbon-fiber nylon. Its low surface energy means glue barely works, so joints get designed mechanically instead. FDM holds ±0.2 mm on typical parts. And while PP handles wash-down and food-adjacent duty, we don't make food-contact certification claims. Chemical resistance is chemical-specific — tell us exactly what the part sits in, and we'll confirm the match at quote time or tell you straight when PP is the wrong answer.

Can you 3D print polypropylene?

Why do most 3D printing services not offer polypropylene?

Is 3D printed polypropylene chemically resistant?
